Judge's Comments

"I have over the years judged at many open shows and always been disappointed that Newfoundlands were few and far apart, they are a magnificent breed and a superb show dog and always look good when in the groups. I must confess that now with their profuse coat I can understand why few attend open shows it must take many hours of grooming to prepare the dogs for show days so time may well be spent better at championship and club shows. As such I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of the exhibitors who spent many hours grooming their dogs for me to go over. They were indeed a credit to all, I found every dog had been prepared very well; coats were all groomed to perfection and were in superb condition.

I was disappointed in the variation in size of similarly aged dogs also with the lack of muscletone and bone in many. The lack of these meant many were very weak on the hindquarters which for a breed as substantial as this is extremely worrying, light eyes and poor dentition was also a disappointment for me as I expected better in both.

I was very pleased with my principle winners of most classes in particular the young ones as these are the future of the breed, I must also pass a quick comment on the veterans who were both in tip-top condition and a credit to their handlers."
