"It was a great honor to have had the opportunity to judge the many fine Newfoundland dogs at you Championship Show. My thanks to the Newfoundland Club for the invitation, it was wonderful. A special thanks my stewards who kept me straight as to procedures, on time, and helping with all the paperwork. Also a special thanks to Kirsteen Farrar and Loraine Ratter for their support and knowledge of UK judging. I thank all the people who entered the show, without you there would be no show. The sportsmanship shown by all the owner/handlers in the ring and ringside was also very good. It makes judging much more pleasant in an environment of good will.

I found quality if every class, with many of the dogs and bitches competitive worldwide. The brown dogs and bitches were, as a whole, better than I have see in the US or other countries. The Best of Breed dog was wonderful. He was strong in structure and in breed type. He was a great picture standing but even better when moving. Congratulation to his breeder and owners.

Temperament, which is the hallmark of the breed, was excellent in all the dogs and bitches. Not one was shy or aggressive. They all wanted to be with their owners in the ring. They were having a good time and it showed, even when it got hot in the building in the afternoon, they were ready for whatever they were call on to do. They were true Newfoundlands.

I did see far too many poor top lines; some would have been better with exercise, but some were just structure faults. In addition I saw quite a few poor fronts with lots of crossing on the return from the down and back. Fronts are a problem with in the breed worldwide. We, as breeders, need to work hard on this fault, but not at the expense of breed type. We always need to keep our Newfies looking like Newfies.
